The Experience Around A Boardroom Table Matters.

The experience around a boardroom table matters. So does the way that experience is brought into the discussion.I've just completed the two-day ICD-Rotman Governance Essentials Program, and one session in particular has stayed with me.

Decisions in the Boardroom explored the Hidden Profile effect, where individuals hold important information that may never fully emerge during group discussions. It was an interesting reminder of how easily decision-making can be influenced by early preferences, shared assumptions and the dynamics of the people involved.

What particularly resonated with me was the importance of establishing decision criteria early, encouraging different perspectives and creating an environment where constructive challenge is welcomed.

Having spent much of my career in operational and executive leadership, I've experienced the pressure to make decisions, establish direction and move into execution.

The programme offered a valuable opportunity to examine those responsibilities through a different lens, particularly the distinction between management accountability and the governance and oversight responsibilities of directors.

My biggest takeaway was that effective decision-making requires both experience and a disciplined process that allows that experience to be fully considered.

Two worthwhile days of learning and reflection, with plenty to carry forward.#CorporateGovernance #Leadership #BoardEffectiveness
